Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna

Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna (MDMY) – I’m sure by now you would have heard it somewhere or the other, even if you’ve not got the clear picture.

Whenever any thing new comes up, I always have a “why” ready (all thanks to my inquisitive nature). So when I got to know about this project, the reaction was no different. I had the urge to know – Why this action plan to create awareness and clean up Yamuna? Time and again, several NGOs and for that matter government itself has taken up initiatives to save our degrading historically significant river but Alas! Hasn’t had much luck. Then why are we just doing the same thing and wasting our time?? The Art of Living also drove an initiative “The March” last year with huge fanfare which was meant to awaken the patriotism in delhiites and bring them together to stand up against terrorism and corruption. In my own personal experience of last year’s drive, it failed to achieve its objectives (pardon me if I may add the word terribly!!)

So, I assumed MDMY to be yet another similar story and wasn’t really keen on this project. Well, assumptions are never based on sound premises! During a conversation with an AOL teacher, I discussed my apprehensions and the answers I got created a paradigm shift in my thinking! I realized I was judging the present by the past experience! Present is something we can always work on! Past helps us realize the loopholes and drawbacks and work on them the next time!

Still left with some doubts, I did a research on the success rate of river clean up projects in rest of the world – The Thames, Hudson, Singapore River etc. For those who don’t know, all of them have undergone massive clean up drive at some point in time! MDMY Project CAN be a great success – the only pre-requisite is WE, the people. In my opinion, earlier projects have failed for the sole reason that they were considered to be governmental / NGO projects. So the energy and zeal was missing. Consider MDMY to be YOUR project – OUR project. Whenever terror strikes in Bombay / Pune, people come to streets to protests and unite to stand up against injustice. Needless to state the impact such incidents have had.

Realize that if we all stand up and work for our very Yamuna, things WILL change! Don’t wait for miracles to happen, miracles also support the worthy! Let’s be worthy enough!

P.S: If my write up is unable to awaken some pity for Yamuna’s plight, please visit Yamuna some day. That will! Sometimes what you see is felt more than what you get to read!

Keep Smiling :)
